Biopythos

Biopythos is a small company out of Limoges, France. They craft beautiful winemaking jars in both stoneware and porcelain. Limoges has a rich history of crafting high-quality porcelain, and Biopythos keeps this tradition alive with their line of winemaking vessels.

The stoneware and porcelain vessels come in various sizes and shapes, ranging from 3 L eggs to 550 L eggs, and 120 L jars to 1000 L jars, as well as the new addition of 14HL and 30HL tanks. Please see below for tech sheets of their various offerings

Stoneware Eggs and Jars

The stoneware vessels come in various sizes and shapes, ranging from 3 L eggs to 550 L eggs, and 120 L jars to 1000 L jars, please see below for tech sheets of their various offerings. The eggs will offer much more convection movement in the wine, and give an effect similar to battonage due to the stirring of lies. Stoneware is less porous than Terra Cotta, and offers a winemaking vessel with similar thermal kinetics to amphorae, but with less oxidation, creating tighter, more focused wines. The stoneware is completely inert, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine through on the finished wines.

Porcelain Eggs and Jars

Porcelain is even less porous than Stoneware, and helps shape wines with incredible precision and delicacy. The offer of the porcelain vessels match the volumes of the stoneware offerings. This material is particularly suited for very delicate, fruit-forward whites, rosés, and reds. Porcelain is the least porous of our egg/amphorae offerings and allows for very slow oxidation and aging of the wine. This material mimics the tight preservation of fruit profile found with stainless tanks, but with a very slight porosity that helps the wine open and allows for movement within the wine as a result of the vessel’s shape

Larger Tanks

As of 2025, Biopythos has released a line of cubic tanks that can be used for both fermentation and aging of wine. The capacities of these tanks range from 14HL to 30HL. Please see below for their tech sheets.

Custom Formats

Biopythos is also exploring new forming techniques by using their high-tech 3D printers to create unique forms from stoneware. This new technology allows for geometric shapes, previously unachievable with traditional ceramic molds or pottery wheels.
